About Evia Bio CellShield™
CellShield products use osmolyte technology inspired by nature to protect cells without the need for DMSO. A combination of penetrating and non-penetrating cryoprotectants protect cells and tissues throughout the entire freezing and thawing process.
The CellShield technology comes in an optimized, cell-specific cryopreservation kit. Each kit consists of a 2X CPA solution, a buffer, and an optimized cryopreservation protocol for a given cell type. All components of the kit should be utilized for best results.
Frequently Asked Questions
CellShield™ MSC Capabilities, Protocols, and Ordering
Product Overview & Technology
What is CellShield™ MSC?
CellShield MSC is a next-generation cryopreservation and storage media kit, engineered specifically for mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs). It is a fully defined, protein-free, and DMSO-free solution that uses a proprietary combination of osmolytes to protect cells during freezing without the toxicity associated with traditional cryoprotectants.
What are osmolytes?
Osmolytes are small, organic molecules that are present in natural systems, including the human body. Examples include sugars, sugar alcohols, and amino acids.
Why is being “DMSO-free” important for MSC cryopreservation?
Removing DMSO eliminates the cytotoxicity and stress responses often triggered by conventional freezing agents. CellShield MSC allows for high post-thaw viability, recovery, and functionality without requiring an extra wash or “recovery culture” step, reducing processing time and minimizing cell loss.
What is included in the CellShield MSC kit?
Each kit is designed to support optimal workflow and includes three components:
- CellShield MSC 2X CPA: A concentrated cryopreservation solution.
- CellShield MSC Buffer: A specialized buffer for cell suspension.
- Optimized Protocol: A specific introduction and controlled rate freezing (CRF) protocol tailored to maximize recovery for MSCs.
Performance & Data
How does CellShield MSC performance compare to DMSO-based standards?
Internal and third-party testing demonstrate that CellShield MSC delivers equivalent or superior performance to standard DMSO solutions:
- Viability & Recovery: Comparable to 10% DMSO controls, often exceeding 90%.
- Attachment: CellShield MSC meets or exceeds competitors in post-thaw attachment, a critical metric for MSC functionality.
- Overall Yield: Due to superior attachment, the overall yield (Recovery x Attachment) is higher (83%) compared to leading DMSO standards (68%).
Does CellShield MSC alter the phenotype or function of the cells?
No. Extensive characterization confirms that CellShield MSC preserves the native cell surface phenotype (CD45, CD73, CD90, CD105) and differentiation potential. Furthermore, RNAseq analysis shows upregulation of cytoprotective genes rather than the stress-response genes seen with DMSO.
Which MSC sources has this product been validated on?
CellShield MSC has been tested and validated on all major MSC sources, including:
- Bone Marrow-derived MSCs.
- Adipose tissue-derived MSCs.
- Umbilical Cord Blood-derived MSCs.
- Human Embryonic Stem Cell-derived MSCs.
Protocols & Usage
Is a wash step required after thawing?
No. Because CellShield MSC is non-toxic and DMSO-free, it does not require an immediate post-thaw wash step, simplifying the workflow and reducing the risk of cell loss during handling. However, a wash may be needed to adequately perform post-thaw assessments.
What is the recommended freezing method?
The kit includes specific instructions for use, including an optimized Controlled Rate Freezing (CRF) protocol. Deviating from the recommended freezing rate or incubation times may impact post-thaw outcomes.
Is this product suitable for clinical manufacturing?
The current 100mL kit is Research Use Only (RUO) grade, suitable for process development and comparative testing. A GMP-grade version of CellShield MSC is planned for release in Q1 2026 to support clinical translation.
Ordering & Support
